Bruce's Market Grand Opening
Excerpt from Albion Ragg - February 2001
From time to time Bruce's Country Market remembers an event from the past. What better way to start than look at the Grand Opening of Bruce's Market in 1948. The grand opening was advertised in the Maple Ridge - Pitt Meadows Gazette. The Gazette started printing in March, 1922. In more recent times the name was changed to the Maple Ridge News. Grandma McEachern looks back on April 2nd and 3rd, 1948 with fond memories. "They were both beautiful days! We gave away free ice cream for the kids, and they loved it. Alan Baker came, Johnny and Steve Wynnyk were there for free ice cream on both days! Things were quite a bit different in those days though, we sold no eggs, no milk, no bread. Of course, everybody around here had cows and chickens, and they made their own bread. We sold flour and sugar in 100 lb sacks, and very few vegetables. Everyone had their own gardens and root cellars. We did sell apples and oranges though. In the early days, it was just Grandpa and I. We had one employee and one panel van for deliveries. We did lots of deliveries back then." Things sure have changed, but friendly country service can still be found at Bruce's Market, and so can Grandma McEachern!
